Al Aitken is 60 years old and has lived in Virginia since 1986...in Culpeper since 1997. Al came to Virginia from California as a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps. He retired from the Marines in 1990 after 20 years of active service as a fighter pilot and graduate of the U.S. Navy's Test Pilot School. His Marine Corps career included various leadership positions in Marine Corps Fighter Squadrons including two extended deployments to the Far East, one deployment as Maintenance Officer of his F/A-18 squadron aboard the USS Coral Sea and participation in a combat strike in the Mediterranean Sea area in 1986.
After the Marine Corps Al became a pilot for American Airlines. In May of 2000, after 10 years with American, he was elected by his Washington, D.C. based pilots to be their Chairman of the Washington domicile of the Allied Pilots Association. Immediately after September 11, 2001, he became heavily involved in the effort to arm our nation’s airline pilots to protect our national security and prevent another terrorist hijacking. After 18 months of intensive effort, and despite the enormous opposition from gun control and airline management groups, federal legislation was passed mandating the arming of our nation’s airline pilots. Al Aitken was one of the two principle leaders who pushed the issue to success.
Retired again from American Airlines, Al is founder of and now serves as Chairman on the Board of Directors of VOTORS. He lives with his wife, Nancy, in Culpeper, Virginia, and enjoys time with his grandson, helping his wife at home and building and flying homebuilt airplanes.
